A simple and classic toy. Hurdy Gurdies. We got these from the Wound and Wound Toy Company out in California. They specialize in toys from years past. These two play “When you wish upon a star” and The Beatles “Yesterday.” I have a stack of them that only come out at Christmas as well.

I wanted to play a little bit of catch-up here in regards to the challenge. The weather was great this weekend, however, the children were not – so I didn’t get to go outside for pictures. I’m hoping that this colic stage ends soon and hubby is done with this semester of classes even sooner.

Anyway- I took pictures of things around the house that are interesting me as of late. I don’t have time to tweak them in Photoshop – so here they are in all their unedited glory.

Fabrics. The left is for Pirate’s RocketShip Quilt that Alison is helping me with. Sorry I haven’t cut it yet Alison, but I will be trying my hardest to get to that this week! The right side is a pile of fabrics that I bought at the local HobbyLobby (1/2 yard each) just because they were different that then normal basic quilters cottons that they carry. They have spunk and color – definitely not traditional. I don’t know what I’ll use them for – but whatever!

Needles – can’t sew without needles! And yarn – although I consider this to just be roving… It’s from handpaintedyarn.com and it’s becoming a scarf for me, just slowly because I have to use HUGE needles and they are too cumbersome to really knit with!

Two special books from our library. The left side is my Nonnie’s Bible. She paid $3 for it in 1934. The handwritten receipt is still in side with pages that are filled out about family information and such. It’s heavy and leather and still smells like her. I know she read it every day for hours. I brought it home with me after she passed away – I may never read it, but at least I know I have something that was so special to her. I think she would be proud to know that I have it because it will be loved and well taken care of. The left is one of my favorite books with a bookmark that one of my mother’s crazy-assed sisters made.

Fee Fell for Ant. Really. She did. And now she has a little squishy reminder of that event!While she is stateside I made this little guy and sent him over to Ant to deliver to her. I hope that she enjoys the little guy – so squishy and lovable!

A Challenge!

I have entered myself into a little challenge that I came across over at OrangeFlower’s blog.

I will be trying my hardest to post a picture everyday that was shot using the MACRO mode or a MACRO lens. It will be a challenge – especially with my two little ones and stupid Iowa weather… should be interesting anyway…

It will be a little bit easier if I can get this computer to work with my card reader so I can upload up here so I can entertain the cublets at the same time!

Craft Month Update

Warning – picture heavy. I will post them smaller so you won’t be too overwhelmed!

First: a stack of patchwork pincushions. These are seriously easy to make and even more seriously addicting. I made a couple more of these but I am using one, and two others were mailed to Pam and Zonda. I made them with scraps of fabrics from a giant fat-quarter quilt I am working on.

Next: a baby blanket for a friend/hubby co-worker. I didn’t know what they were having at the time (a girl!!!) so I went with gender neutral flannels and chenilles. I made this by sandwiching the quilt top with a thin batting and a flannel backing, sewing all around and turning it out. I quilted the top by stitching in the ditch around the green border and about 1/2″ in from the edge. It’s cute and warm.

KNITTING:
Xiris’ Hat. I call it the BlackOut Special. He wanted something warm and lined. So I showed him the RedLight Special, and he liked it – but said “except for all that fou-fou crap all over it” So it’s knit out of KnitPicks Telemark in black and chestnut with Shine Sport in creme for the lining (why knitpicks won’t do more darker colors for Shine I don’t know). I put in a few stripes and he liked it. I wish it were a bit longer to cover his ears more – and I wish I had thought to do the “joggless” stripe thing. This is the best picture I could get of him in it because he is so busy with school right now. Two more weeks and then I get him to myself for a few weeks! Hooray!

and finally: more quilting. for Pirate. I am about to work on a big quilt for him, but I thought I had better practice on something smaller. I found this fabric panel called “Ride the Rails” at the local Hobby Lobby. I decided to outline quilt all over it and try a scribble where there should be texture and such (roads and gravel). I had alot of fun! The twit that cut the panel really screwed the pooch with this one though. She somehow managed to cut it on some sort of bias even though there was a CUTTING LINE drawn out for her between panels. She was smacking her gum and talking with a girlfriend at the time (and was barely tall enough to reach the counter AND cut to the other side of a bolt’s width). So I had to improvise when it came time to put the binding on. That’s why it looks a little wonky. This was my first time making binding. I tried using a 1″ tape maker and that was a pain in the butt. I don’t think I’ll do that again. But I mitered the corners! Go me! The picture shows the binding not attached on the back. I am hand sewing that on, and as of right now, I am about 3/4 the way around. It doesn’t take as long as I thought it would – but I do wish I had a thimble on. I shall have to find one!

Not pictured: an iPod cozy and another elephant for my friend Fee, but she doesn’t have it yet so not pictures!

Ahhh…. Spring!
